Tyranids: How do you combat Null Deployment?

So, as I have been recently doing, I took pictures and gathered some notes from a game I got on Saturday, April 10th against my buddy BlueEquis ( www.termagantswellspent.blogspot.com ) . Well, I lost the pictures on my phone and the notes have disappeared... -_-

In summary, it was a very close game. It went down late in the game, scrambling for objectives. His big monsters were still alive and managed to kick off my scoring units at the last turn.

Which brings me to my main question: With many shooting armies, having targets is rather important. I lose an entire turn of shooting against his null deployment force. Then, with hive commander, many of his units are able to come in turn 2 without a large amount of difficulty.

How do you combat this sort of list?

  1. Well, what list were you playing?
How many objectives were there and where were they placed?

  2. 5 objectives, Spearhead deployment I believe. 2 objectives about 15" from the left side of the board, 2 more roughly parallel to them in midfield, and then 1 on the right side of the board, also about 15" from the edge and midfield.

Tyranids held the left two on turn 7, central objectives were contested by the Trygon Prime, and the rightmost was held by Pedro and the Sternguard, who were in the process of beating the Tervigon, who couldn't quite assault pull them off the objective, to death.

And here's the Tyranid list: 1747 pts

Hive Tyrant w/ Lashwhip and Bonesword, Paroxysm, Leech Essence, Wings, TL BL Devourers, Hive Commander

  4. A few things I was able to take advantage of in game:

Guard your flanks. Use your Rhinos and Landspeeders to protect against my outflankers. The Tervigon can only assault 12" on, and the only thing the Genestealers hate more than whiffing against armor that's moved is getting rapid-fired by the squad when it disembarks or BBQ'd by a heavy flamer after they've bunched up in assault.

It might also be worth it to have a Tac Squad and the Sternguard trade rides - that's a huge chunk of points to be immobile, and the fact that you have to commit it so early is a real advantage to me.

From a list perspective, not sold on the dual HQ. A case could be made for either but given your fluff I'd think about trading in the Librarian. He doesn't really do anything for you with the Terminators, and I'm not sure his psychic defense alone is worth his price in vehicle hulls.
